Elon sophomore found guilty on drug charges

Sophomore, John Philip Steers was found guilty on drug-related charges.

Steers pled guilty to misdemeanor charges for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia

As a result of his guilty plea, the state dropped a felony charge for possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and a misdemeanor charge for maintaining a dwelling house for drugs.

Steers was sentenced to 50 hours of community service which will be completed in his hometown of Rye, N.Y. Steers will also be subject to random drug screenings throughout next year. He will also have to enroll in North Carolina’s drug education program.

Steers and sophomore, Sean Thomas Finan, were arrested in April after police seized 7.2 grams of marijuana and other drug related paraphernalia from their Elon dorm room, according to police reports. Steers was released from prison after posting a $2,500 secured bond.

According to Steers’ lawyer, Ricky Champion, Steers is currently undergoing treatment and therapy and has been clean since his arrest.

Finan faces the same charges when he is scheduled to appear in court on July 27th.
