From Coach To Mayor
Current Elon town Mayor Jerry Tolley will run for re-election this Tuesday and says he is confident going into the election.
“Well when you run unopposed, you feel pretty good,” he says.
Tolley has held the job for 12 years and still has goals for Elon’s future.
“We’re working with consultants right now to look at the downtown area to see what we can do to revitalize it to get people from all over Alamance County and even Greensboro to make the town a destination place to come to eat, visit and have a good time,” Tolley says.
As mayor, Tolley helped revitalize the downtown area. But his work in the town has not always revolved just around being mayor. Tolley coached the Elon University football team for five years.
“The finest moment was winning those two national championships,” he says.
He says he still spends a lot of time on Elon’s campus.
“Every Saturday and Sunday morning, I ride all over town,” he says. “I just ride looking to see what we can do here and how we can improve.”
Tolley lived in the area after retiring from coaching, and he says he has always felt a connection to campus.
“We can always leave Elon but Elon will never leave you, and when I come back, I feel that,” he says.
Tolley says he plans to stay in the town for the rest of his life.
“I’ve never had the desire to go anywhere,” he says. “A lot of my friends, when they retire they want to go to the beach or to the mountains, but I just want to stay at Elon.”
