Adventures in Asheville
While some Elon students just got back from a weekend in Asheville where they rooted on the men and women’s basketball teams, there’s more to Asheville than watching basketball.
On any given street, one will walk past street musicians, art galleries and chocolate shops with homemade fudge displayed in the window.
European restaurants, boutiques and unique architecture provide plenty for a visitor to take in.
Right across the street from the U.S. Cellular Center where the tournament is being held, is St. Lawrence Basilica.
Built in 1905 by Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino, the church is the only basilica in western North Carolina.
If you leave the quiet of the church, you can rejoin the bustling streets of Asheville where street musicians play, sing and try to make a couple of bucks.
If you’re looking to spend a couple of those bucks, the Grove Arcade, built in 1929, was once considered “one of the most elegant buildings in America,” and consists of retail space, restaurants and art galleries.
While you can’t fit all of Asheville into one weekend, the sounds of the streets, the architecture and people provide a lot to see.
