College Consumer: Fun activities to try over Winter Term that won’t break the bank
With only one class to focus on during Winter Term, students have more free time than during the regular semester. To escape boredom and avoid the temptation of a Netflix marathon, here are a few ideas of inexpensive activities to do and places to go during the month of January.
First, if you’re looking for a fun place to dance with your friends, Arizona Pete’s is the place for you. The country music saloon in Greensboro is a 30-minute drive from Elon. With music, line dancing and even a mechanical bull, it’s sure to be a good time. Prices fluctuate between $5 and $12, but Thursdays are “College Nights” that offer discounts with a student ID.
If you’re into sports, the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team plays less than an hour away from Elon at the PNC Arena in Raleigh. There are home games on Monday, Jan. 13; Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Jan. 19 at at 5 p.m. Tickets can be pricey, but the new “Canes College Rush” program allows students to buy tickets between $10 and $25 an hour before face-off.
The Mad Platter is another great option and a fun way to express yourself through art. As inexpensive as $12, the studio is located on S. Church Street right here in Burlington.
Lastly, if you need a new place to satisfy a sweet tooth, the Flour Bin Bakery might be worth the five minute drive from campus. Located on Main Street in Gibsonville, the bakery is filled with delicious smells and homemade goodies like cookies and cinnamon rolls. With so many options, you just can’t go wrong.
