Update: Police Believe Armed Robbery was Falsified

An Elon store clerk has been arrested and charged with filing a false police report, larceny by employee and resisting a public officer.

Steven Shane Jernigan, 24, was taken into custody Wednesday, according to the Elon Police report. On June 23, he reported an armed robbery at Jay’s Mart where he worked as a clerk.

After an investigation, however, police believe that no robbery occurred, and the story was fabricated.

Jay’s Mart is a convenience store located about a mile east of Elon University at 951 East Haggard Ave. On the day of the alleged incident, Elon students faculty and staff received an email about the robbery.

When officers responded to the call in June, Jernigan informed police that a male suspect displayed a handgun and took cash, before fleeing the scene on a black and orange moped.
