Changes No Longer Brewing in Downtown Elon
Elon University is delaying all plans for changes in the dining venue in the historic neighborhood and Downtown Elon, according to Gerald Whittington, senior vice president for business, finance and technology. Previous plans to move a Starbucks into Acorn Coffee Shop’s location, and to move Acorn to Varsity Sports Grill in Downstairs McEwen Dining Hall have been put on hold for at least a year.
According to Dan Anderson, potential new restaurants at “Park Place at Elon,” the new residential building next to Skid’s on Haggard Avenue, as well as a change in the traffic patterns once the new School of Communications building opens in Fall of 2016 will influence the decision.
Whittington also expressed that Elon has been committed to the success of many local businesses on campus, like Irazu Coffee Shop and The Oak House.
This announcement comes after the Change.org petition urging the university to reconsider adding Starbucks to campus garnered more than 3,000 signatures as of Thursday afternoon.
Einstein Bros. Bagels is still set to open in the Daniel Commons Fall 2016.
