The Elon University baseball team failed to capitalize with runners in scoring position, leaving 11 baserunner stranded in a 8-3 loss to Ball State on Feb. 22.

With the loss, the Phoenix drop to 4-2 with both loses coming at the hands of the Cardinals.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Quinn Bower scored off a Kory Shumate double to left field to tie that game. The Phoenix looked to score again later on in the inning, but stranded two Joey Tomko and Nick Zammarelli.

Ball State scored again in the second courtesy of an Elon error, but the Phoenix would rebound in the bottom of the inning. With Chris King on first base, Austin Leeney singled advancing Kind to third. Andy Moore followed that up with a sacrifice fly, scoring King.

Down 4-2 in the fifth, Zammarelli doubled, bringing home Tomko to cut the lead to just one run. But much like the first inning, Elon left two runners stranded.

The Cardinals offense came alive in the following inning. With the bases loaded, Elon forced a walk to give Ball State a 5-3 lead. The next batter hit a 2 RBI double. At the end of the inning, the Cardinals led 8-3.

Starting pitcher Lucas Bakker struggled, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits over five innings.

Up next, Elon visits High Point on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game against the Panthers.
