Elon softball strikes out hunger in Alamance County

Most college students spend their Friday evenings going out and hanging with friends. For members of the Elon softball team, they spent their evening at Allied Churches of Alamance County handing out food to the those in need.

Patrons lined up outside the Burlington shelter anxiously awaiting a dinner featuring turkey and cheese sandwiches, salad and various tasty desserts. For freshman catcher Callie Hall, it’s a great opportunity to give back.

“It’s been fun getting to just be with my teammates and have a good time and help those in the community,” she said.

Elon’s timing could not have been better, with Hurricane Joaquin drawing near and over 100 residents venturing over for what could be the last good meal before the storm hit.

It was an eye opening experience for Hall.

“It definitely shows how grateful we really area as Elon students,” she said. “To be at such a pretty campus and to be so blessed with all the opportunities that we have available there. So, it’s just nice to get out and experience the community and see what others have.”

Hall added that she wishes to come back as much as possible whenever she is available.

The Elon softball team will continue to volunteer at Allied Churches the remainder of the semester, handing out meals the first Friday of the month from 6-8 p.m.
